String Orchestra is a brand-new program at Glen Ridge High School, scheduled to begin in fall 2017. Enrollment will be open to students in the seventh through twelfth grades who play the violin, viola, cello and double bass. There will also be a new ensemble at the Ridgewood Avenue Upper Elementary School for students in the third through sixth grades.
String Orchestra will meet weekly (as an after-school group) for ninety minutes per session, to learn techniques and grow their skills as musicians, individually on their chosen instruments, and as a group, to learn how to play music in an ensemble.
The orchestra director will select the music, focusing on works originally written for string orchestras by composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Sergei Prokofiev, as well as modern pieces by Adele and Panic! At the Disco.
String Orchestra will have three performances during the school year at the winter, spring, and chamber concerts.
